Fishing the Bitterroot River is getting better day by day. We saw a sizable bump in river flows last week however they are becoming more stable. There is rain in the forecast for this weekend which will cause a slight bump. Temperatures are getting down to freezing at night so fishing deep pockets with a long dropper are your best bet, especially in the mornings. Streamer fishing has been producing well on the cloudy cool mornings. Try stripping in a wooly bugger or sparkle minnow to target those fish with bigger appetites. When fishing in the warmer afternoons we've still been seeing good dry fly action. Consider a dry dropper with a skwala pattern or for those smaller dries a BWO, parachute, or cripple pattern will fish well.
Current flows for the lower river are 1680 CSF, upper river 980 CSF, and the West Fork is 250 CSF. There are many obstructions throughout the bitterroot river as well as diversion dams. Currently there is wood down between Vets-Woodside that may require you to drag your boat. When floating Woodside-Tucker make sure you keep left because there is a tree down on the right channel. Always stay diligent while floating the Bitterroot, there are new obstructions every day, especially with the water levels dropping.
