May 9th Fishing Report

May 9th Fishing Report

With the weather staying cool all of last week the Bitterroot has been fishing well. We've been seeing some great hatches in the afternoon leading to some epic dry fly fishing. We suggest using BWO, purple hazes, gray drakes, or a caddis pattern. In the earlier afternoons and mornings, we suggest nymphing or streamer fishing. Some nymphs that have been producing well out there are Rubber legs, Jig Prince nymphs, Flashback PT, Duracell's, and San Juan worms. Streamers that are doing well right now are sparkle minnows, wooly buggers, mini dungeons, and goldies. With the predicted increase in flows, the higher up on the river you go, the better your chances of landing fish.

We are due for a pretty major increase in flows this upcoming week. The temperature is going to be consistently above 70 degrees during the day and above 40 at night. Currently the lower river is sitting at 1500 CFS, upper river is 1150 CFS, and the West Fork is 460 CFS. The river is very unpredictable to begin with but with the increased flows, using extreme caution out there is a must.
